Songkran... the annual water festival that marks Thailand's Buddhist new year.
Celebrations take place in mid-april for about 3 days. The traditional roots of the festival center around coming together to give and receive blessings by way of the gentle  sprinkling of water.

With the modernization and opening up to tourism of Thailand in the 20th century, not to mention the advent of the piston-pressurized water gun, the festival has taken on an increasingly secular and boisterous character. In addition to honoring traditions, Songkran is looked forward to as a
time to come together and mix with those of all walks of life, a respite from social norms, a celebration to endure until the very last moment.
